  10. EPG Products (Memory Boards):

  13. This is a breakdown of AST (EPG) Memory Products which require
  14. certain versions of the REMM.SYS Expanded Memory Manager.  This
  15. is not to be confused with AST Premium Computer System's REMM.SYS
  16. drivers.  This breakdown does not apply to AST Computer Systems.

  28. If you are using an application program which requires an older
  29. version of REMM.SYS (your software should state this in it's
  30. documentation), then you should use an older version - rather
  31. than the most recent version.

  33. SPECIAL NOTE: You can determine which products REMM.SYS is
  34. compatible with by its version number.  For REMM.SYS versions 4.0
  35. and later, an ODD version is for AST EPG Memory Boards (i.e
  36. RAMpage, Advantage Premium, etc.).  An EVEN version is for AST
  37. Premium Computer Systems (i.e. the Premium/286, etc.).

  39.               REMM.SYS v4.3 is for AST Memory Boards
  40.               REMM.SYS v4.2 is for AST Computer Systems
  41.  
  42.               This REMM.SYS identification strategy does not
  43. apply to REMM.SYS versions prior to 4.0.

  45. If any of these products are installed in an AST Premium computer
  46. system, then you should use the REMM.SYS that was intended for
  47. use in that particular computer.

  51. SYSTEMS (AST Premium Computers):
  52. --------------------------------

  54. The following are versions of REMM.SYS that have been released
  55. specifically for AST Premium Computer Systems.  They are not
  56. intended for use with any AST Memory Board (except when the
  57. Memory Board is installed in an AST Premium Computer System). 
  58. Released REMM's for the Premium/286 are:
  59.  
  60.     REMM.SYS v4.20 (EMS 4.0 Specification)
  61.     REMM.SYS v4.00 (See Notes Below)
  62.     REMM.SYS v3.50 (EMS 3.2 Specification)
  63.     REMM.SYS v3.00

  65. NOTES: If you are currently using REMM.SYS version 4.00, than you
  66. should consider updating your system to the latest version
  67. (specifically, version 4.20).  This way, you can be assured that
  68. you are using the most up-to-date version that AST has available
  69. (REMM.SYS version 4.20 is fully LIM-EMS 4.0 compatible).

  73. AST Premium Workstations use the same REMM.SYS versions that the
  74. Premium/286 does.  However, it is designed around LIM EMS v4.0,
  75. and thus will not work with any versions of REMM.SYS prior to
  76. v4.0.  So, if you have an AST Premium Workstation, you should be
  77. using the most current version of REMM.SYS that is compatible
  78. with LIM-EMS v4.0 (i.e. REMM.SYS v4.20).

  80. AST Premium/386 computer systems do not use a REMM.SYS device
  81. driver.  But rather, it uses a driver called ASTEMM.SYS that
  82. converts 80386 Extended memory (linear) into Emulated EMS 4.0
  83. Expanded memory.  Thus, REMM.SYS should not be an issue on a
  84. Premium/386 computer system.

  86. AST FASTboard/386 accelorator boards for the Premium/286 must be
  87. used with REMM.SYS version 4.27.  This board can not use the
  88. general Systems or EPG REMM drivers, do to the special nature of
  89. the board.

  93.                         REMM.SYS 4.X AND DESQVIEW 2.XX
  94.

  96. Users of DESQview 2.01 (or above) may experience system lock-up
  97. when using a version of REMM.SYS of 4.10 (or above).  The lock-up
  98. occurs when running an interrupt-intensive application such as a
  99. serial communications program.
  100.  
  101. The reason that this particular combination causes this symptom
  102. lies in the fact that the LIM 4.0 functions are being executed in
  103. software, requiring a large amount of processing time.  This
  104. amount of overhead becomes critical when processing time must
  105. also be devoted to servicing the stream of interrupts generated
  106. by a communications program.  Any application that must devote a
  107. great deal of time to both expanded memory operations and serial
  108. communications will eventually be unable to keep pace and cease
  109. to function.

  111. It is recommended that those users who operate in this
  112. environment andexperiencing problems, replace the 4.xx version of
  113. the REMM.SYS driver with a 3.xx version.  For AST Systems
  114. products, version 3.50 of REMM.SYS is recommended.  For AST
  115. board-level expanded memory products version 3.10 of REMM.SYS
  116. will operate in this environment.

  118. Those users with expanded memory hardware which fully supports
  119. the LIM 4.0 Specification, (i.e., AST RAMpage Plus/286 or AST
  120. Premium/286 using Advanced FastRAM), will not experience any of
  121. the difficulties outlined here.

  123. Please note: It advisable to verify that the correct DESQview
  124. configuration and operation procedures are followed.  Appendix E
  125. in the DESQview Manual contains detailed information about
  126. running communications programs.
